Massachusetts Overdose Prevention Helpline

The Massachusetts Overdose Prevention Helpline has provided virtual spotting services since October 2022. The helpline is operated using a combination of paid staff and volunteer operators and provides free, 24/7 service. Operators receive paid training and continuing education. In late 2022, the RIZE-MA Foundation awarded a $100,000 grant to the Grayken Center for Addiction at Boston Medical Center to build capacity of the hotline under Stephen Murray and Dr. Alex Walley’s leadership

  • Recruited and conducted paid training for fifteen new operators who are providing more than 1,541 hours per week of total available volunteer hours
  • Created a new logo and promotional materials
  • Distributed 30,000 business cards and 300 posters to 110 different organizations and governmental agencies around Massachusetts
  • Presented the helpline to the entire Massachusetts HEALing Community study team, as well as five of the community coalitions
  • Met with potential partners at suicide and crisis hotlines to discuss areas of potential collaboration
  • Engaged with supportive/harm reduction housing partners like Commonwealth Land Trust to establish future relationships to lower the incidence of fatal overdose for recently housed individuals
  • Joined the North American virtual overdose detection collaborators network
